CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE

BECCS

The energy transition to a low-carbon economy is necessary to meet the goals set in the Paris Agreement to mitigate climate impacts and keep Earth's temperature increase below 2°C. Although important for the planet, the imposed goals represent different challenges for each industrial sector. Given this, the Brazilian government has created incentives, such as RenovaBio and BECCS, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint generated by various industrial activities. The BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) incentive program is a way to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in geological reserves, contributing to the reduction of carbon in the atmosphere.

CO2 INJECTION WELL

The carbon storage process in subsurface geological formations consists of three essential stages: (a) capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulting from energy generation or industrial processes, (b) transport of the carbon dioxide, and (c) storage of the carbon dioxide within an adequate geological structure. Capture and transport of carbon dioxide are well-known industrial processes. In turn, injection wells, used by the oil industry to inject gas into underground geological formations, have been specially designed to inject CO2 into geological structures. Formations used to store CO2 include not only depleted oil and gas reservoirs, but also any geological formation that has the capacity to store CO2 safely and effectively.
